How to visit the Canary Islands without flying?
Travel sites in the Canary Island, off Spain’s west coast, have been closed since October after authorities found a “large number of large plastic bags” at the airport.
The containers contained more than 100 plastic bags that were not fit for human consumption, according to a statement by the airport operator.
The bags were seized after a series of airport raids in the region in September, the Canary islands airport operator said in a statement on Wednesday.
“We have received a large number of plastic bags which were not designed for human use.
They are considered as dangerous as those carried on planes,” the statement read.
The Spanish government said it was suspending all flights from the Canary island, which is a popular holiday destination for tourists.
In October, the UK announced that it was closing its airspace to airlines in the EU following a similar crackdown on plastic bags.
